In ancient times, this month was called Nabhasya and Praushthapad. According to astronomy, this month is known as Bhadrapad because of the formation of eastern or northern Bhadrapad Nakshatras. The Yoga with this Nakshatra is formed on the day of Purnima.
Bhadrapada Purnima Pooja
Lord Satyanarayana is worshipped on Bhadrapad Purnima. He is worshipped with fruits, banana leaves, supari, pan, til, moli, roli, kumkum etc. Panchamrit is made with milk, honey, banana, ganga jal, tulsi and sweets. Prasad is made by mixing wheat and sugar together and roasting them. Lord Satyanarayana is worshipped after this Katha. After this, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.
On the day of Bhadrapad Purnima, Lord Vishnu is worshipped after taking a bath. Donating food, clothes etc to Brahmanas is considered sacred on this day. Lord Vishnu blesses any person who takes a bath on this day in some sacred river. He blesses such a person with happiness, contentment, wealth etc.

Bhadra month is an important month in the Hindu calendar. Many changes can be seen in the surroundings. Many eatables are prohibited in this month. For example, according to Ayurveda, curd should not be consumed. According to astrology, Lord Vishnu should be worshipped on the Saptami of Krishna Paksha when Krtika Nakshatra Yoga is formed. Heavy rains can be seen during this month. New buds, plants etc can be seen all around.
Lord Ganesha’s Sidhhivinayak form is also worshipped during this month. Lord Ganesha has been considered to be a Deva related to water and hence, worshipping him is considered very important during this month. Lord Ganesha is worshipped during this month just like Lord Shiva is worshipped during Savan month. The period from Bhadrapad Purnima to Ashiwini month, Krishna Paksha Amawasya are celebrated as Pitrapaksha. During this period. water etc is offered to ancestors to make them happy. Shradh etc is also performed during these days.
